Objectives of the Best Practice:
Our environment is getting at stake due to different threats which are being imported on humanity and in the present scenario environmental sustainability is critical in view of rising environmental deterioration, and it may be achieved by the adoption of eco-friendly activities. The objectives of nurturing environment sustainability are:
Our campus boasts an abundance of plants and sunlight. It is critical to turn green waste and sunshine into useful sources of food. Our institution has put in place processes that allow garbage to be turned into compost and used as fertilizer in the campus garden as well as the peasants of adopted villages for the usage as fertilizer. Using sunlight to generate solar energy is a significant step towards lowering carbon footprints. The energy generated, thus meets almost half of the college’s energy needs. To keep the college clean and lush green, a balance between waste utilization and waste transformation/disposal must be maintained. On the college grounds, a large amount of green waste is generated, which is composted as manure.
Our college is determined to create an eco-friendly and sustainable campus. Instilling the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability among students and faculty, the college has taken some initiatives through the following practices:
The college organizes a variety of events and campaigns to raise environmental awareness on a regular basis through the following steps:
Paper campaign:
Several campaigns to discourage the use of polythene are conducted. Eco Club and NSS run several social media campaigns to raise awareness. Student volunteers interact with the general public to raise awareness about the responsible use of natural resources among them. Our NSS volunteers frequently visit the nearby downtrodden community to raise an awareness campaign on food habits and health among slum dwellers.
Since November 2018, a 10 KWH solar power plant has been operating on the college rooftop and it becomes benevolent for the college to reduce the hike of electricity bill.
The campus of our college is green and vehicle-free. Vehicle movement and parking on the main campus are prohibited; a designated area has been set aside close to the main gate.
There is a medicinal garden on the campus with nearly 50 different species of medicinal plants, which gives the college a healthy atmosphere.
The Vermicompost Unit of our college converts food and organic waste into vermicompost, which is then used in the college garden and it is provided as an organic fertilizer to the farmers in our adopted communities.
Rainwater from the roofs is collected and sent through a system of pipelines to a body of water inside the campus.
Reduced carbon footprint:
The college has significantly reduced the carbon footprint that results from the usage of conventional electricity sources.
Reduction in electricity:
The electricity bill of the college has significantly lowered after the successful installation of the rooftop solar power plant.
Awareness among staff and students:
We have been successful in enhancing awareness of the environment and the need for sustainability among the employees and students of our college
Switching to renewable energy is an expensive process, hence government support and involvement are necessary in order to receive financial aids and subsidies.
Ongoing initiatives are made to promote environmental consciousness among students, faculty members and college employees as a whole.
To promote the growth of the neighbouring community holistically.
In our college, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets work towards community service in education, health, environment and rural development. Their relentless activities include awareness campaigns, tree plantation, blood donation camps, free education and community service projects in adopted villages.
The students of the college work together to spread awareness of AIDs, dengue, thalassemia, and cancer among the inhabitants of local community.
The pivotal purpose of organizing a blood donation camp is to inspire individuals to donate blood for saving life and engage in charitable activities.
Our college is situated in flood prone area. During such natural disaster like a flood, the NCC and NSS unit offer assistance from a close quarter to the flood stricken people.
Through the “Safe Drive Save Life” campaign, the college’s NCC and NSS departments and the Ghatal Police Station raise an awareness of road safety in collaborative manner among pedestrians who are coming across different fatal accidents.
To make the environment green and pollution free the students take part in tree Plantation in adopted villages and college premises.
The Students participate in Quit tobacco programme to raise an awareness against the ill effects of tobacco taking among active and passive smokers.
Our NSS volunteers are getting involved in such cleanliness programmes by the riverbanks, bus stand, railway stations and adopted villages.
Cleanliness Drive Programme under Swachhata Action Plan (SAP):
Our college also actively participates in various cleanliness activities under Swachhata Action Plan (SAP) with the help of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India. Our students, NCC and NSS volunteers carried out different activities inside and around the college campus including Birsingha ( the birth place of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar).
The students take part in free education programme for the distressed boys and girls in their adopted villages who are getting bereaved from their education due to economic hazards.
To make these programmes fruitful, energetic youths are badly needed and frequent motivation should be provided to them. Insufficiency of monetary aids and ignorance of the people concerned are being observed as problems.
As this institution is situated at the nearby birth place of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar that is why we should shoulder upon the challenges to spread the education among less privileged ones.
