It is a pleasure to present a brief overview of the Department of Chemistry at Ghatal Rabindra Satabarsiki Mahavidyalaya, established on August 14, 1961, to mark the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. Located in the heart of Ghatal along the Ghatal–Panskura road, the college is well connected to nearby rural areas. Its closeness to Birsingha, the birthplace of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, enriches its cultural legacy. The green, serene campus offers an ideal setting for academic growth.
The Department of Chemistry introduced its Honours course in 2002, marking a key step in its academic growth. Since then, it has developed steadily with dedicated faculty and laboratory staff. Currently, three teachers use a mix of traditional teaching, modern audio-visual tools, and practical sessions to ensure effective learning. The department also has well-equipped laboratories and a maintained library to support undergraduate study and basic research.
Over the years, the department has achieved strong academic success, with several students qualifying in IIT-JAM and progressing to prestigious institutions. Alumni are well placed in organizations like IICB, Indian Oil Corporation, Exide, and Chem Bio Tech, as well as leading institutes such as IITs, NITs, IACS, IIEST and Visva-Bharati University, reflecting the quality of education and mentorship.
The department continues to improve and modernize, with plans to upgrade laboratories with advanced instruments like a spectrophotometer, rotary evaporator, and centrifuge to enhance practical learning. It regularly organizes national and international seminars, inviting eminent scientists to expose students to current developments. Faculty members are also actively involved in research.
Looking ahead, the department aims to strengthen its academic and research activities, promote innovation, and nurture skilled graduates who can contribute effectively to science and society.
