PREFACE TO THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Sociology at Ghatal Rabindra Satabarsiki Mahavidyalaya was established in 2014 with the aim of promoting the academic study of society and social processes at the undergraduate level and offers general course. Since its inception, the department has followed a three-tier examination system in accordance with Vidyasagar university norms. Initially structured under the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System), the curriculum has now been updated in alignment with the NEP 2020 framework, adopting a semester-based pattern to ensure a more flexible and multidisciplinary approach to learning.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The Department of Sociology undergraduate general course designed to introduce students to the foundational aspects of the discipline. The course exposes learners to fundamental concepts, key sociological theories, and essential research methods that form the core of the discipline. It provides a comprehensive understanding of how societies function and evolve, equipping students with the ability to interpret and analyze social realities. In a rapidly changing world marked by social, cultural, economic, and political transformations, the study of sociology has become increasingly relevant. This course aims to equip students with critical and analytical tools to examine the structures and processes that shape their everyday lives. Through the exploration of themes such as family, class, gender, race, and social movements, students gain insights into the complexities of human interactions and inequalities. Additionally, the curriculum emphasizes the study of important social institutions, including education, religion, and government, alongside training in sociological methodology. By fostering sociological imagination and critical thinking, the department seeks to develop socially aware and responsible individuals who can engage meaningfully with contemporary societal challenges.
